The Community Photoworks project, initiated in 2005 by the J. Paul Getty Museum, will culminate in an exhibition of student work at the Golden State Cafe in Los Angeles, California, from May 31–June 7, 2009. The project, aimed at exposing students in Los Angeles to the art of photography, was launched in conjunction with the Getty exhibition, Jo Ann Callis: Woman Twirling.  Community Photoworks is a collaboration between the Getty Museum’s education department, the nonprofit writing and tutoring center 826LA, and Los Angeles Senior High School.

Over the course of the Community Photoworks project, the students studied photography, both in class and at the Getty Museum, examining works of art and learning tools to analyze and discuss photography. The students visited the Getty in April where they met with artist Jo Ann Callis and participated in a dialogue session about her exhibition.  Jo Ann Callis: Woman Twirling served as the launching point for in-depth discussion about varying facets of tension, from the interpersonal tension of U.S. events to the visual tension in Callis' photography.

“As a longtime teacher at CalArts, this was a wonderful opportunity to work with even younger students deepen their understanding of art through the vehicle of photography,” says Callis.

Following a series of intensive workshops, the eleventh-graders had the opportunity to apply what they learned by using cameras to consider how their own lives are affected by tension.  The program included two in-class workshops, in which the students supplemented their photography by preparing artist's statements about their work.

The exhibition at the Golden State Cafe features the work of 28 eleventh-grade U.S. History students from Los Angeles Senior High School, who documented their environment and neighborhoods and prepared artist’s statements about their work.  Subjects ranged from XX to YY and explored TENSION. The exhibition is co-sponsored by 826LA, which helped the students polish their artists statements and is supporting the production of a catalogue of the students’ photography and written work for distribution at the exhibition.

Julius Diaz Panoriñgan, Director of Education for 826LA, adds, “Part of 826LA’s goal of helping students become better writers is to enhance the understanding of writing’s importance to various disciplines. Community Photoworks showcases the relationship between the visual arts, language and writing—so, it’s an ideal forum for students to develop their abilities across all these fields.”

There are future plans to launch an online exhibition of the student work on the Getty Web site.  This interactive online gallery will include the student-produced images and written work, as well as information on the project and links to individual objects in the Getty’s collection.

“Community Photoworks is designed to help students build critical looking skills through the medium of photography, and, ultimately, raise their awareness of the conscious choices people make,” says Ami Davis, the Getty Museum’s education specialist for school programs.

The Getty Museum’s role in the program included developing lesson plans, providing supplies for the project (including art materials and disposable cameras), subsidizing bus transportation to the Getty Center, training staff members from 826LA and Los Angeles Senior High School, and conducting a specially designed photography workshop at the Getty Museum for the participating students.

826LA

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.
